Calendar JANUARY 2023 January 4 - Agenda: The caregiver/Parkinsonian split --Those with Parkinson in one room and family members and caretakers in another. Goal is to be a positive experience to examine resources that are available to each group which has different needs. Even if you are by yourself either with Parkinson or as a caregiver, we hope this will still be beneficial and you are most welcomed.
FEBRUARY 2023 February 1 - Meeting cancelled. MARCH 2023 March 7 - Guest Speaker: Kathy Schulze. She is a speech therapist and will talk about the Lee Silverman Voice Training, LSVT LOUD therapy or SPEAK OUT. APRIL 2023 April 4 - Speaker: Nanny Matthias Community Liaison- Homestead Assisted Living. Will talk when should one consider moving into Assisted Living. Will also talk about their programs. MAY 2023 May 2 - Kelly E. Lyons PhD- She works with Dr. Raj Pahwa. Many of you saw her at the symposium in Kansas City. She is Director of Research and Education PD and Movement Disorder Center University of Kansas Medical Center Kansas City, Kansas . This will be a video conference. Come with questions. JUNE 2023 June 6 - Speaker: Emily A. Donaldson, CELA is the the only Certified Elder Law attorney in the Topeka area, Will provide helpful information to folks faced with the possibility of needing long-term care. The financial and legal issues encountered when dealing with this disease are difficult and scary for most people, and getting access to an expert can help alleviate some of the stress they face. August 24 (9:00 AM to 1:00 PM) FREE - Bus from Topeka to Symposium on Parkinson, in Kansas City at the Mariott at 435 & Metcalf Saturday, August 24, 2024 Symposium 9:00 AMto 1:00 PM. TIME - We will leave at 7:00 am on west side of White Lakes Mall north side of Walgreens at 37th & Topeka Blvd - it will be easy to find. Bus driver plans to be there by 6:30 am. You may leave your car in the parking lot. We will be dropped off at the entrance of the Mariott nearest the conference, so there will be minimal walking. LAWRENCE PICKUP - We make a quick stop in Lawrence near the entrance where the toll booth is to pick up passengers there. SNACKS - There are also plenty of “goodies” at the conference. SEPTEMBER 2023 September 5 - Guest Speaker Mae Lovell, a retired Registered Nurse learned the benefits of Tai Chi in China. Has taught here for 16 years. Is certified by Tai Chi for Health Institute, an international program developed by a physician. Presently she teaches for Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging, Brewster Place & Celebration Villa. The benefits of Tai Chi include improvement of balance, muscle strength & flexibility, along with lowering stress. OCTOBER 2023 October 3 - Guest Speaker: Paul Del Rio , RXM 6585, head pharmacist at Wal-Mart at 6th & MacVicar. He will be on hand to answer your questions. His father-in-law had Parkinson's, so he has hands on understanding of the disease. NOVEMBER 2023 November 7 - Guest Speaker: Adrianne Meyer Director of PACE Marketing and Intake : In partnership with CMS, KS Dept. on Aging & Disabilities & the KS Dept. of Health & Environment/Medicaid/KanCare. PACE helps people ages 55 and over to stay at home by coordinating medication, management, transportation, and home care. She will also talk about respite care for the community.
